The image of Bihariji installed at the Shri Banke Bihari Mandir is the one granted to Swami Haridas by the celestial couple Shyama-Shyam themselves. Submitting to the need for devotees god appeared in man with his divine consort and left a shameful charming image before disappearing.
Swami Haridas Ji was born to Shri Ashudhir along with his wife Smt Gangadevi on the afternoon of Radha Ashtami i.e., the eighth day of the second (bright) fourteen days of Bhadrapad month of this calendar year 1535 Vikrami(1478 A.D.). He was born in a little village, currently known as Haridaspur, close Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh. The linage of the family could be tracked straight back into Shri Gargacharya. Shri Gargachrya was the kulguru (family ace ) of Yadavs and seen Brij secretly for conducting the Namkaran Samskar (naming ceremony) of young Krishna and Balram on a petition of Sri Vasudev. A branch of this family migrated into Multan (now in Pakistan), but some of these returned after quite a lengthy moment.
This easily explains the fact that even in his childhood, he was into meditation and scriptures, while other kids of his age had been busy playing. He was married at the appropriate age according to the opportunity to Harimati. Even after his union, young Haridas stayed away from worldly delights and focused on meditation. Harimati Ji was this kind of saintly soul that on realizing the inclination of her partner, she prayed intensely and had been bodily hauled to the heavenly abode of Lord by going into the flame of a tiny lamp in the presence of Haridas. No physical remains were left behind!
Immediately then Haridas abandoned his village for Vrindavan, that had been a dense woods at the time and select a secluded spot, which is now called Nidhivan, to rehearse his music and also to enjoy endless bliss of meditation. He always and always meditated on Nitya Ras and also Nitya Bihar of Lord at Nitya Vrindavan. His manner of Sadhna was going to compose and sing songs in praise of Lord. While in the world, living in a deadly state, he facilitated his regular unobstructed entry while in the Nitya Bihar and always enjoyed the pleasure of familiarity with Lord. He picked a scenic and densely forested place, Kunj, in Nidhivan as his gateway into the nirvana and was sitting, singing, meditating and surfing in the sea of eternal bliss.
His descendants had been interested in this place and yet one day together with the permission of Swamiji, they entered the Kunj. But instead of seeing anything, they were nearly blinded by bright, intense light, that seemed to match the whole location. On knowing in this plight Swamiji himself went there, then after his requests, Lord appeared in man with his divine consort, pleasantly smiling and also in a lively mood and projecting a spell of charm on every living being present there. People who watched that were spell bounded by the attractiveness of the Lord and his consort, which they couldn't even wrap their eyes seemed that every one of them turned to stone statues.
The legend as handed down to the productions of Goswamis, says that the beauty of the divine couple was such that no-one desired to lose the sight and also closeness of divinity, but then what kind of divinity is it, which could not produce merely a mortal swoon and charmed enough to forget and quit the entire world and its luxuries? The great thing about the divine couple was so much lesser mortals, like all of us, will not have the ability to endure this type of heavenly beauty. Sensing this Swami Haridasji asked both them to choose a single form, as the world won't be in a position to keep their image. He asked them to choose one form like Ghan(cloud) and Damini(lightning), thus giving a great apology into the joint elegance of the dark Lord and his fair consort, Radhaji.
Also, he wanted his cherished Lord to maintain the front of the eyes consistently. Granting his equal dreams, the bunch turned into one single black magic idol the exact same one which you visit in the temple now. The charm and beauty of Shri Banke Bihariji may be the only reason why the 'darshan' at the temple is never continuous but is broken by the curtain is drawn him regularly. It's also said that if a person stares long enough into the eyes of Shri Banke Bihariji, the person will lose his self-awareness.
Initially, the deity was installed in a temple close to the first appearance in Nidhivan. A fresh temple befitting the attractiveness of Bihariji was assembled in 1862 AD. Goswamis themselves mobilized funds for the construction. The temple is an architectural beauty in itself and follows exactly the contemporary Rajasthani style.
The sewa of this Bihariji is exceptional in its unique way. While shringar (which include a bath, dressing, and adornment with jewelry like crown and necklaces) and also Rajbhog(feast) can be offered in the forenoon, Shayan Sewa (Shayan means sleep) is offered in the evening. The temple does not always have a convention of Mangala (morning) sewa. Swami Haridas did not favor Mangla Sewa because he wanted his own child such as Lord to take a full break and did not wish to disturb him out of deep slumber therefore early each daytime.
So, the temple now stands to have its full glory, inside that god himself resides. It is thronged by thousands of people every day.
